What NBA Team had the Best Road Record in 2007/2008

Filed under: Uncategorized, About every sport — admin at 2:45 pm on Tuesday, May 13, 2008

It would be understandable if you did not pick the Boston Celtics - but the Celtics were the owners of the best road record in the NBA for 2007/2008. Since the playoffs have started, however, the Celtics have been unable to win on the road. They are 0 and 5 on the road in the playoffs. This is not a recipe for long term success in these playoffs…

It would appear that all an opposing team has to do is take 1 game in Boston. The rest should take care of itself…

Schill Ready to Throw

Admitting that he was wrong about needing surgery and that the Boston Red Sox medical staff was correct, Curt Schilling is ready to start throwing a baseball again. There is no timetable for Schilling’s return to the pitching rotation, although speculation says around the All-Star break.

Schilling also restructured his contract dropping the weight clauses which leaves $2 million on the table. Instead, performance clauses are being put in for him to earn that money back.

Roger Clemens Woes Continue

Poor Roger. Many consider him to be a cheater because of the allegations of his use of performance enhancing drugs. Now you can add the moniker of philanderer to his footnotes. Clemens has been accused of a decade long affair with a 15 year old girl, and numerous extra-marital affairs. While admitting to no specifics, Roger has apologized for “mistakes” that he has made in his personal life.

It just keeps getting worse for Roger…

How Things Change. . .

Filed under: Uncategorized, About every sport — admin at 3:10 pm on Monday, May 5, 2008

One thing that can be said of baseball, the only constant is change. Never get too comfortable with the way things are because in time, often in very little time, they will change.

A week ago the Boston Red Sox got broomed out in Tampa Bay as part of a stretch of 5 games where they only managed to score 4 runs. Fast forward a week and the Red Sox have completed a brooming of the Devil Rays in Boston in a 3 game stretch where the Sox managed so score 26 runs!

Now it is off to Detroit for a 4-game series. What version of the Red Sox will we see this time?

Where, Oh Where, Did the Runs Go?

Filed under: Uncategorized, About every sport — admin at 3:09 pm on Friday, May 2, 2008

An old adage in baseball is that you cannot win games if you do not score runs (you can file that one under “da”). In the last five games the Boston Red Sox much vaunted lineup has managed to score 4 runs. They are 2-3 in that run thanks mainly to incredible pitching from their starters and last minute 9th inning heroics. They were shut out 3-0 twice in the 5-game run.

Averaging less 1 run per game is a recipe for disaster. Pitchers cannot win games without run support…

A Call from the Clue Phone to the Boston Celtics

Uh, guys. In case you were wondering. That best in the NBA season record will become meaningless if you lose in the first round. Just though you might want to know…

PS - Of course, it will also become meaningless if you don’t win it all… No pressure…

The Numbers Tell the Story

The Red Sox find themselves on Monday broomed out of Tampa Bay by the Devil Rays. The problem - hitting and runs… The numbers easily tell the story. 5 runs in 3 games, with only 1 run in the last two. Hitting for the series? Check this out…

  • Youkilis .000 (0 for 10)
  • Ortiz .000 (0 for 6)
  • Varitek .000 (0 for 6)
  • Lugo .100 (1 for 10)
  • Pedroia .143 (2 for 14)
  • Crisp .143 (1 for 7)

NFL Draft Takes on a Life of Its Own

Filed under: Uncategorized, About every sport — admin at 3:17 pm on Sunday, April 27, 2008

It seems like the NFL draft over the last few years has become an event almost as big as the “big game”. The amount of media coverage of the draft over the last few weeks has been enormous. For no other sport is the draft such a big deal.

I think it is important to maintain perspective. While I acknowledge that in the draft there is hope - hope that a team will acquire the right player or players to make an impact and a difference. But it is just that, hope. All of the players being drafted are prospects. Many, including many in the 1st round, will not work out or live up to expectations.

For me it is hard to get excited. First of all there are two playoffs in progress (NBA and NHL). Second, the baseball season is underway. I find it very hard to care very much about football in the spring. I’ll wait until the fall and performance on the field before I get excited about draft picks…

Bullpen Ruins Debut for a Kid

Filed under: Uncategorized, About every sport — admin at 2:58 pm on Friday, April 25, 2008

23 year old Justin Masterson was livin’ the dream. Called up from Portland, he got his first major league start for the Boston Red Sox last night against the Angels. And the kid delivered - 6 innings of 1 run, 2 hit ball! Pretty much the definition of livin’ large.

Enter the Red Sox bullpen - or should I say the resident batting practice crew… 6 runs in 3 innings later the Red Sox had a 7 to 5 loss. Masterson should have notched his first major league win. Instead…

I think it is time, even this early in the season, for the Red Sox to start thinking about their bullpen deficiencies… Maybe some of these young starters should stay up in the bullpen, and some of the current crew should be sent down?
