A Classic NBA Finals Headed our Way

Filed under: Uncategorized, About every sport — admin at 3:26 pm on Saturday, May 31, 2008

With another rare playoff road win the Boston Celtics have catapulted themselves into the NBA finals to face the Los Angeles Lakers. For the Celtics it is their 20th NBA Finals appearance, but first since 1987 (a loss to the Lakers). The Celtics are 16-3 in the Finals. For the Lakers, it is their 29th appearance and first since 2005 (a loss to the Detroit Pistons). The Lakers are 14-14 in the finals.

The Celtics and Lakers have faced each other 10 times in the finals prior to 2008 (1959, 1962, 1963, 1965, 1966, 1968, 1969, 1984, 1985, & 1987), which will be their 11th meeting in the finals. The Celtics have won the match up 8 times, and the Lakers have won it twice.

The Celtics Step Up

Filed under: Uncategorized, About every sport — admin at 2:48 pm on Sunday, May 25, 2008

A few days ago the Celtics did something that they had not done in the playoffs - they lost at home. Last night they continued their walk on the wild side by again doing something they had not done in these playoffs - they won on the road defeating the Detroit Pistons 94-80.

The Celtics road win puts them back in control and in a good position for the rest of the playoffs. The worst they can do is come back from Detroit tied 2-all, a decidedly better fate then if they had lost last night…

Are the Celtics in Trouble?

Filed under: Uncategorized, About every sport — admin at 2:42 pm on Friday, May 23, 2008

The answer is most probably yes. Detroit managed to do something that no other team has done to the Celtics during the playoffs. They beat them at the TD Banknorth Garden. Now for the Celtics to take the Eastern Conference Finals they need to do something they have yet to do in these playoffs - win on the road. It is starting to look like Detroit in 6 or 7.

A lesson that the Celtics should take from the New England Patriots. The regular season accomplishments become meaningless if you do not win in the playoffs…

Tiger Watch

Speculation is that Tiger Woods will return to golf after successful arthroscopic knee surgery in April at the Memorial Tournament in Dublin Ohio next week. There is, however, no confirmation from Tiger’s camp on this. The next event that he is scheduled to compete in is the U.S. Open (June 12-15) according to his web site.

Boston Red Sox Doing a Good Job of Staying on the Front Page

Filed under: Uncategorized, About every sport — admin at 3:02 pm on Tuesday, May 20, 2008

With the Boston Celtics in the NBA playoffs it would be understanding if they were dominating Boston sports coverage. Not so with the Red Sox doing so well and writing new pages of Red Sox history.

The Boston Red Sox are managing to not only stay front and center, they are doing it with style. And here in Boston, front and center does not mean the lead sports story, it means the lead story on the paper’s front page. Jon Lester’s complete game no hitter was the lead story for the Boston Globe this morning. Lester becomes the second Red Sox pitcher in a row to pitch a no hitter on top of the Clay Buchholz gem last September.

Veteran catcher Jason Varitek also grabbed a little piece of history becoming only the 2nd catcher in MLB history to catch 4 no hit ball games (the other catcher to do this was Ray Schalk in 1914 (2), 1917, 1922).

The Pattern Holds for the Celtics

It’s a little rough on the fans - every series going to 7 games. But that is the way it will stay unless the Boston Celtics relearn how to win on the road. I still contend that this in no a recipe for long term success through the playoffs - even if the Celtics are thus far proving me wrong…
