Setting the Record Straight

Filed under: Uncategorized, About every sport — admin at 3:14 pm on Sunday, December 30, 2007

The 2007 New England Patriots have just completed a phenomenal regular season. In 2007, the team and individuals on the team set many new NFL records (they also tied many records and set many franchise records). The NFL records set by the New England Patriots in 2007 include:

  • Wins in a single regular season — 16 (third team to have an unbeaten season but first team to have a unbeaten 16 game season)
  • Consecutive regular-season wins — 19 (and still counting)
  • Total points in a season — 589
  • Single season record for touchdowns by a team — 75
  • Single season record for TD passes — 50 for Tom Brady
  • Single season record for touchdown receptions — 23 for Randy Moss
  • Single season record for touchdowns between a passer and receiver — 23 Tom Brady and Randy Moss

Now it is on to the playoffs to see how all if this record breaking can translate into a championship…

2007 Championship / Bowl Game Round Up at Around the Half Way Point

Filed under: Uncategorized, About every sport — admin at 4:14 pm on Saturday, December 29, 2007

We are past the half way point in the college football championship / Bowl game season. Thus far the vast majority of the games (over two thirds) have been competitive with a margin of victory of 14 points or less. In nearly a third of the games the margin of victory was less than a touchdown. There have been only 4 complete blow-outs.

Some milestones of note at just past the half way point for this championship/bowl season:

  • Mount Union takes the record for the most points scored (62) in a game in their 62 to 14 win over Bethel in their NCAA Division III Championship Semifinals matchup
  • The most combined pints scored in a game is 99 in Purdue’s 51 to 48 win over Central Michigan in the Motor City Bowl. Other high scoring games of note include 90 points scored in Appalachian State’s 55 to 35 win over Richmond in the NCAA Division I Championship Semifinals, and 86 points scored in the Holiday Bowl when Texas defeated Arizona State 52 to 34.
  • There have been two 1 point games:
    • Sioux Falls (S.D.) 11 | Missouri Valley 10 in the NAIA Football National Championship Semifinals
    • BYU 17 | UCLA 16 in the Las Vegas Bowl

A Sad State of Affairs

The Boston Globe ranked its Top 10 national sports stories of 2007. Sadly, 5 of the 10 have the taint of scandal…

1. Barry Bonds HR record and facing perjury charges - take note Barry. Your accomplishment is inextricably intertwined with the allegation of cheating and the fall out from that…

2. Michael Vick imprisoned for dog fighting

3. The Mitchell Report on the use of performance enhancing drugs in Major League Baseball

4. NBA referee Tim Donaghy’s betting scandal

7. Marion Jones steriod use and stripping of Olympic medals

What a wonderful example our professional athletes and officials are setting for the youth of our country…

Merry Christmas from Nutty About Sports

Merry Christmas from Nutty About Sports
At this time of year it seems only fitting to provide a great example of kindness. In this case, it is the crowd at Fenway Park (who are not always known for their kindness).

On Disabilities Awareness Day at Fenway Park, this man with autism, who was chosen to sing the national anthem, got a case of the giggles half way through. Listen to how the crowd joins in to help him out.

May we carry this spirit throughout the year. Merry Christmas.
