The Offense is Much Better than the Defense

Filed under: Uncategorized, About every sport — admin at 4:52 pm on Monday, November 26, 2007

In watching the New England Patriots this year I have come to a couple of conclusions. They are an extremely good football team. But I have always had a nagging feeling that the defense was suspect. The offense has been so good that the defense has not had to be on the field all that much. When they have, however, their always seemed to be something lacking.

Last night’s game against the Eagles seems to confirm my suspicions. The Eagles defense slowed down the Patriots offense considerably. The defense had to be on the field much more. How did they do, well they had a very hard time with the passing attach of a second string quarterback - A.J. Feeley. Feeley was 27 for 42 with 345 yards passing. If it was not for a 2 extremely well timed interceptions (one for a touchdown) the Patriots would have lost. While it is nice to get the well timed interceptions, a defense should be able to stop a second string quarterback without interceptions. If you take the interceptions out of the equation the Eagles scored on 4 possessions and were forced to punt on 3. The pass coverage was bad all night. The pass rush was nonexistent. That is a miserable defensive showing.

So what does this mean for the future. The Patriots are in the playoffs. They have clinched their division already. In the playoffs, however, defense matters - and they will run into some very good defenses. If they slow down Brady and company the playoffs may not be too kind to the New England Patriots.
