Filed under: Uncategorized, About every sport — admin at 3:33 pm on Sunday, September 30, 2007

All right, this one is confusing enough that I am not even going to try to explain it… Tere is a possibility of a 3-way tie breaker in the National League based on the outcome of today’s games.

It is done. The Red Sox beat Minnesota tonight, and Baltimore took out the Yankees in the 10th inning 10-9. The Boston Red Sox have their first American League East title since 1995 breaking a 9 year Yankees stranglehold on the American League East championship.

League Batting Register 1987 Cardinals THESE ARE VERY ROUGH! Couple obvious bugs. Sorting the league register causes the intermediate headers to get bunched up. We have a solution for this. However, the intermediate headers will go away on a sort. I suppose I also need to somehow add a minimum PA/IP feature in [...]

MLS Playoffs and MLS Cup

Filed under: Uncategorized, About every sport — admin at 6:28 pm on Friday, September 28, 2007

A quick update on Major League Soccer… 4 teams have clinched a spot in the playoffs - D.C. United, Chivas USA, New England, and Houston. 4 positions remain open.

In Major League Soccer the top 2 teams in each conference make the playoffs and are seeded 1 & 2 in their 4-team conference bracket. The 4 teams with the next most points regardless of conference also make the playoffs.

The MLS Regular season will end on October 21. The MLS Cup championship game will be held on November 18 at RFK Stadium in Washington D.C.

This story is a couple days old, but worth refreshing. On the heels on Nikolay Davenko’s investigation last month, I wrote about how tennis is an easy target for criminal organizations looking to cash in by fixing matches. Well, things are not getting any better for tennis.

The Math is All in the Boston Red Sox Favor

Filed under: Uncategorized, About every sport — admin at 4:58 pm on Thursday, September 27, 2007

No matter how you slice it, with 4 games left and a 3 game lead you have to like the Boston Red Sox chances of winning the American League East.

There are 25 different permutations (math speak for combinations of outcomes) of outcomes for the Red Sox and Yankees. Only 3 of those have the Yankees taking the division (the Red Sox win no games and the Yankees win 4 or 3, or the Red Sox win 1 and the Yankees win 4). All other outcomes have the Red Sox winning the American League East Division championship. For those of you who are math challenged, the Yankees have a 12% chance of winning the American League East. Conversely, the Red Sox have a 88% chance of taking the AL East Crown.

And you never thought your high school math would come in handy…

Explaining the Excel Bug - Joel on Software

Explaining the Excel Bug - Joel on Software This has come up on some newsgroups I’m in and this is a nice explanations. I’ve taught Numerical Analysis five or six time to undergrads and I go through the IEEE floating point representation pretty carefully with them. I typically demonstrate the 0.1 has no exact representation in [...]

Magic Number 3

Filed under: Uncategorized, About every sport — admin at 3:07 pm on Wednesday, September 26, 2007

The last time I checked last night the Boston Red Sox were cruising along nicely over Oakland and the Yankees had a commanding 5-0 margin over Tampa Bay. When I checked first thing this morning, the Sox had cruised on to a 7-3 win, but the Yankees lost 7-6 to a walk-off solo shot in the bottom of the 10th.

The shoe appears to be on the other foot now. The Red Sox had their mini swoon last week to tighten up the American League East race. Now the Yankees, not ones to be outdone, seem to be starting one their own mini swoon with 2 loses in a row.

The Red Sox are 3 up in the AL East and the magic number to clinch is also 3 (you have to like the symmetry). No matter how you do the math, things are looking good (I hope that I do not come to regret writing that…).

Of note last night were the return of Manny Ramirez and Kevin Youkilis who both got into the game for 2 at bats (Manny 1-2 and Youk 0-2). It is important for them to get back in there swinging a bat to work out any rust for the playoffs.

Things are felling pretty good in Red Sox Nation this morning…
